COVID-19 has presented many new challenges that required dental schools and ASDA to take action. Regional guidelines vary across the United States causing ASDA chapters to differ in the extent of activities they are able to hold. Despite these differences, ASDA chapters have continued to offer programming, support, and value to members.

The PFM (Porcelain Fused to Metal) Crown Awards was designed by the 2020-2021 Council on Membership and approved by the 2020-2021 Board of Trustees to celebrate and recognize the efforts of all ASDA chapters during this unprecedented time.

The goal of the award is two-fold – provide chapters the opportunity to share their unique experience, and for those interested, submit an application to be considered for the PFM Crown Award.

For chapters that submit to be considered for the PFM Crown Award, a chapter finalist from each district will be recognized. Of the 11 finalists, one chapter will be selected for the PFM Crown Award.

Purpose of the PFM Crown Awards 
The PFM Crown Awards provides chapters the opportunity to share their unique experience in a 2 minute video. All chapters that submit a video will receive $100. Chapters may also submit an application to be considered for recognition as the PFM Crown Award winner by demonstrating unique programming and media efforts during the year.

Guidelines:

  • The submission period will run November 11, 2020 – January 15, 2021.
  • Chapter programs, events, and media must have been conducted between Jan. 1 – Dec. 31, 2020.
  • Updated constitution and bylaws must be on file with the central office.
  • Programs or events must be organized by the ASDA chapter, not the school, even at auto-enroll chapters where every student is an ASDA member.
  • Events may be virtual or socially distant, depending on the guidelines of your program.
  • Applications cannot be submitted by a district trustee or any other ASDA national leader.
  • Events hosted by multiple chapters may be included for chapters that facilitated the event.
  • For chapters that submit for the PFM Crown Awards, the video will account for 20% and the one-page resume report will count for 80%.
  • Sounds, music, and images used in the video should all be original content. 

How to Submit:

  1. Create a max 2 minute video. Videos over 2 minutes will be disqualified from the PFM Crown Awards. Suggested items to highlight in the video:
    • New activities/initiative tried.
    • Biggest challenge.
    • Most important thing learned.
    • How leadership skills have grown.
  2. Create a one page resume report of up to 10 initiatives the chapter did during the year.
    • Reports longer than one page will not be accepted. One page standard size of 8.5 inches by 11 inches. Minimum font size of 10.
    • Summarize initiatives in 3-4 sentences.
    • Chapters are encouraged to include initiatives including, but not limited to, media, predental, member engagement, etc.
  3. Submit video and one-page resume report to ASDA. 

Timeline:

  • November 11, 2020 – Submissions open.
  • January 15, 2021 – Submissions close.
  • February 2021 – Council on Membership reviews chapter reports and videos from chapters that submitted for PFM Crown Award and selects a finalists from each district. One chapter from the 11 finalists will be named the PFM Crown Award winner.
  • Starting mid-February – Finalists and PFM Crown Award winner announced on social media.
  • March – All chapters that submit a video will receive $100.
